History and Analysis
This group of six four and a half story tenements were built between 1886 and 1890, according to real estate atlases, coinciding with the large building boom in the neighborhood following the construction of the Myrtle Avenue elevated rail road.
The group of tenements retain much of their original architectural detail, such as the pressed metal cornices of 840 – 848 Bushwick Avenue, the decorative lintels that rhythmically alternate between arched and horizontal designs, and the original short stoop entrances of 842 – 848 Bushwick Avenue. The entraces of 852 and 854 Bushwick Avenue have been altered drastically to allow commercial development on the ground floors and these two buildings no longer have a cornice.
