History and Analysis
The three-story tenement at 25 Troutman Street was built along with the three family dwellings at 19-23 Troutman Street in 1885. Designed by Frank Holmberg and built by John Reuger (carpenter) and Ernst Werch (mason) for owner Johann Lange, the pine- and spruce-framed buildings with outer walls of pale brick and pine sheathing were built on a concrete base, with a brick foundation. It was also built with four brick chimneys and a flat tin roof at a cost of $5400 (cost only for 25 Troutman Street).[1]
The original facade of these buildings has been greatly altered, including the application of a vinyl siding that mimics brick and the boarding up of windows. However, several original characteristics remain, including the wood cornice which spans all four buildings, the stoops of 19-23 Troutman Street, and the metal on the storefront of 25 Troutman Street.
