History and Analysis
1209-1219 Bushwick Avenue is a four story apartment building on the corner of Bushwick Avenue and Hancock Street. The brick structure with a tar and gravel roof was designed by Benjamin Cohn of Cohn Brothers, and is one of the largest buildings in the area. It was commissioned by Louis Sorkin, president of the Bushwick Improvement Company, Inc. in 1923 for $160,000. The land on which 1209-1219 was constructed was one of the only remaining pieces of undeveloped property in the mostly built-up area.
